    Wondrous lines

Let's post here our foreign favourite poetries, book extracts, monologues, dialogues, movie transcripts, quotations, even song lyrics (in spite of the appropriate thread ) and whatever makes us shiver: "lines", not just "verses".

Please, feel free to write in whatever language you like, even in Italian, if you want to spend some words about your lines.

    Lord Randall

I'm always about to sob when I'm reading "Lord Randall", I think I couldn't read it entirely aloud.
It is a popular ballad of the Lowlands (Scotland; it's written in Lalland), it is a sorrowful dialogue between Lord Randall and his mother, and the main theme is his poisoning by a woman and the leaving of the material world.
    [Italian translation at the bottom]

"O where ha you been, Lord Randal, my son?
And where ha you been, my handsome young man?"
"I ha been at the greenwood; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm wearied wi hunting, and fain wad lie down."

"An wha met ye there, Lord Randal, my son?
And wha met ye there, my handsome young man?"
"O I met wi my true-love; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm wearied wi huntin, and fain wad lie down."

"And what did she give you, Lord Randal, My son?
And wha did she give you, my handsome young man?"
"Eels fried in a pan; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm wearied wi huntin, and fein wad lie down."

"And what gat your leavins, Lord Randal my son?
And wha gat your leavins, my handsome young man?"
"My hawks and my hounds; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm wearied wi huntin, and fein wad lie down."

"And what becam of them, Lord Randal, my son?
And what becam of them, my handsome young man?
"They stretched their legs out and died; mother mak my bed soon,
For I'm wearied wi huntin, and fain wad lie down."

"O I fear you are poisoned, Lord Randal, my son!
I fear you are poisoned, my handsome young man!"
"O yes, I am poisoned; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm sick at the heart, and fain wad lie down."

"What d'ye leave to your mother, Lord Randal, my son?
What d'ye leave to your mother, my handsome young man?"
"Four and twenty milk kye; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm sick at the heart, and I fain wad lie down."

"What d'ye leave to your sister, Lord Randal, my son?
What d'ye leave to your sister, my handsome young man?"
"My gold and my silver; mother mak my bed soon,
For I'm sick at the heart, an I fain wad lie down."

"What d'ye leave to your brother, Lord Randal, my son?
What d'ye leave to your brother, my handsome young man?"
"My houses and my lands; mother, mak my bed soon,
For I'm sick at the heart, and I fain wad lie down."

"What d'ye leave to your true-love, Lord Randal, my son?
What d'ye leave to your true-love, my handsome young man?"
"I leave her hell and fire; mother mak my bed soon,
For I'm sick at the heart, and I fain wad lie down."

    "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare

    from Act I, scene VII

    Macbeth's castle.

Hautboys and torches. Enter a Sewer, and divers Servants with dishes and service, and pass over the stage. Then enter MACBETH

    MACBETH:

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come. But in these cases
We still have judgment here; that we but teach
Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return
To plague the inventor: this even-handed justice
Commends the ingredients of our poison'd chalice
    To our own lips. [...]

    Transcripts from The Godfater (1972)

Bonasera: I believe in America. America has made my fortune. And I raised my daughter in the American fashion. I gave her freedom, but I taught her never to dishonor her family. She found a boyfriend; not an Italian. She went to the movies with him; she stayed out late. I didn't protest. Two months ago, he took her for a drive, with another boyfriend. They made her drink whiskey. And then they tried to take advantage of her. She resisted. She kept her honor. So they beat her, like an animal. When I went to the hospital, her nose was a'broken. Her jaw was a'shattered, held together by wire. She couldn't even weep because of the pain. But I wept. Why did I weep? She was the light of my life, a beautiful girl. Now she will never be beautiful again. I went to the police, like a good American. These two boys were brought to trial. The judge sentenced them to three years in prison - suspended sentence. Suspended sentence! They went free that very day! I stood in the courtroom like a fool. And those two bastards, they smiled at me. Then I said to my wife, for justice, we must go to Don Corleone.

    [...]

Don Corleone: Why did you go to the police? Why didn't you come to me first?

Bonasera: What do you want of me? Tell me anything, but do what I beg you to do.

Don Corleone: What is that? [Bonasera whispers his request in the Don's ear] That I cannot do.

Bonasera: I will give you anything you ask.

Don Corleone: We've known each other many years, but this is the first time you ever came to me for counsel or for help. I can't remember the last time that you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child. But let's be frank here. You never wanted my friendship. And uh, you were afraid to be in my debt.

Bonasera: I didn't want to get into trouble.

Don Corleone: I understand. You found paradise in America, you had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. And you didn't need a friend like me. But uh, now you come to me and you say - 'Don Corleone, give me justice.' But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you ask me to do murder for money.

    Bonasera: I ask for justice.

Don Corleone: That is not justice. Your daughter is still alive.

Bonasera: Let them suffer then, as she suffers. How much shall I pay you?

Don Corleone: Bonasera, Bonasera. What have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? If you'd come to me in friendship, then this scum that ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. And if by chance an honest man like yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies. And then they would fear you.

Bonasera: Be my friend - - Godfather. [The Don shrugs. Bonasera bows toward the Don and kisses the Don's hand]

Don Corleone: Good. Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day - accept this justice as a gift on my daughter's wedding day.

    Bonasera: Grazie, Godfather.

    Don Corleone: Prego.

Bonasera: Io credo nell'America. Quann'arrivai n'ospedale a so' faccia faceva paura. A mascidda era rutta. L'aveano cosuta cu' filo di ferro. Nemmeno chiancere poteva tanto era o' male. Io chiancivi, povera figghia. Li fecero uscire nello stesso giorno! Io restai dentro quell'aula come un fesso. E chiddi bastardi mi ridevano in faccia.

Hallowed be Thy name, written by Steve Harris in 1982 and performed by IRON MAIDEN, describes the last thoughts of a man who's waiting for his moment at the Gallow's Pole (nickname for the execution by hanging).

Several band have covered this song, e.g. Dream Theater in 2002, Cradle of Filth in 1998 and many others (there are 11 official covers, according to Wikipedia)

    Here you are some lyrics:

    Hallowed be Thy name

I'm waiting in my cold cell, when the bell begins to chime.
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time.
'Cause at 5 o'clock they take me to the Gallows Pole,
The sands of time for me are running low.

When the priest comes to read me the last rites,
I take a look through the bars at the last sights,
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me.

Can it be that there's some sort of error?
Hard to stop the surmounting terror.
Is this really the end, not some crazy dream?

Somebody please tell me that I'm dreaming,
It's not easy to stop from screaming,
But words escape me when I try to speak.
Tears flow but why am I crying?
After all I'm not afraid of dying.
Don't I believe that there never is an end?

As the guards march me out to the courtyard,
Somebody cries from a cell "God be with you".
If there's a God then why does he let me go?

As I walk my life drifts before me.
Though the end is near I'm not sorry.
Catch my soul, it's willing to fly away.

Mark my words believe my soul lives on.
Don't worry now that I have gone.
I've gone beyond to see the truth.

When you know that your time is close at hand,
Maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...Hallowed be Thy name
Yeah, yeah, yeah...Hallowed be Thy name

    forse allora comincerai a capire

Viking prayer from "The 13th warrior"

Lo, there do I see my father.
Lo, there do I see my mother.
And my sister and my brother
Lo, there do I see the line of my people
    Back to the beginning.
Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place among them
    In the halls of Valhalla
Where the brave may live forever.

    Ecco io vedo mio padre,
    ecco io vedo mia madre
e le mie sorelle e i miei fratelli,
ecco io vedo tutti i miei parenti defunti

V: I can assure you I mean you no harm.
    Evey: Who are you?
V: Who, who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey: Well, I can see that.
V: Of course you can, I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Da Warcraft III - Reign of Chaos:

    Arthas' betrayal

    King Terenas: Ah, my son...

Arthas: You no longer need to sacrifice for your people. You no longer need to bear the weight of your crown. I've taken care of everything.

Arthas approaches Terenas and draws his sword.

King Terenas: What is this? What are you doing, my son?

    Arthas: Succeeding you, Father...

    Arthas impales Terenas; Terenas gasps.

Arthas: This kingdom shall fall, and from the ashes shall arise a new order, one that will shake the very foundations of the world.

Thrall shouts and hurls the Doomhammer at Mannoroth, who blocks.

Mannoroth: A worthy effort, but futile!

Mannoroth charges and knocks Thrall into a cliff face.

Mannoroth: The boy believed you could be saved, but he didn't know what burns within your soul when in your heart, you know we are the same.

    Grom Hellscream: Noooo!

Grom speeds towards Mannoroth and buries his axe in the demon's chest. Mannoroth screams and explodes, flooding the area with magic energy. Grom falls on his back, and Thrall approaches, injured. He falls to his knees and regards his friend.

Grom Hellscream: Thrall...the blood haze has lifted. The demon's fire has burnt out in my veins. I have...freed myself.

    Grom coughs and exhales.

Thrall: No old friend, you've freed us all.

Thrall throws his head back and cries out.

    Arthas' ascension

Arthas is seen ascending the spire of Icecrown Glacier. His thoughts are flooded with lines from comrades long past.

Uther: ...to turn to bloodlust, we will become as vile as the orcs.

Uther: You are not my king yet, boy! Nor would I obey that command even if you were!"

Muradin Bronzebeard: Forget this business! Lead your men home!

Arthas: Damn it, Uther! As your future king, I order you to...

Uther: Have you lost your mind, Arthas?!

Arthas: ...I must consider this an act of treason.

Muradin Bronzebeard: You lied to your men, and betrayed the mercenaries who fought for you! What's happening to you, Arthas?

Medivh: Your young prince will find only death in the cold north...

    Arthas reaches the Frozen Throne.

Ner'zhul: Return the blade. Complete the circle. Release me from this prison.

Arthas cries out and strikes the block of ice. It shatters, and Ner'zhul's helm falls to the ground. Arthas dons it, and his eyes move about rapidly under their lids. His eyes open, and glow with radiant blue light.

    Arthas/Ner'zhul: Now, we are one.

Arthas is last seen seated atop the Frozen Throne.

"Don't tase me bro" - a phrase uttered in vain by a student before his imminent tasering at a speech by John Kerry - has been named as the most memorable US quote of 2007.

Andrew Meyer made his plea as police from the University of Florida cornered him after he tried to question the former Democratic nominee for president. It became, inevitably, a YouTube sensation, graced countless T-shirts, migrated to mobile phone ringtones and was replayed by television stations around the world.

    Queen - BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality
Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go, Little high, little low
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me

Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
    Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters

Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time
Goodbye, ev'rybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooh, I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all

I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very fright'ning me
(Galileo.) Galileo. (Galileo.) Galileo, Galileo figaro
Magnifico. I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come, easy go, will you let me go
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let me go.) Will not let you go
(Let me go.) Will not let you go. (Let me go.) Ah
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
(Oh mama mia, mama mia.) Mama mia, let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here

Nothing really matters, Anyone can see
    Nothing really matters
    Nothing really matters to me

    Any way the wind blows

    Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody Lyrics

da 4'07'' = parte in grassetto

    Questa è la vita vera?
    o è solo fantasia?
    Travolto da una frana
    Senza scampo dalla realtà
    Apri gli occhi
Alza lo sguardo al cielo e vedrai
    Sono solo un povero ragazzo,
non ho bisogno di essere capito
    Perché mi lascio trasportare,
    sono un indolente,
Un po' su un pò giù
    Comunque soffi il vento,
    a me non importa,

    Mamma, Non volevo farti piangere

    Rabbrividisco
Il corpo mi fa male in continuazione,
    Addio a tutti, devo andare
Devo lasciarvi tutti ed affrontare la verità
    Mamma, Non voglio morire,
Qualche volta vorrei non essere mai nato

    Intravedo una sottile sagoma d'uomo,
Fulmini e saette molto, molto spaventoso
    Galileo, Galileo,
    Galileo figaro Magnifico
    No, non ti lasceremo andare
    lasciatelo andare
    Non ti lasceremo andare
    lasciatelo andare
Non ti lasceremo andare - lasciatemi andare
Non ti lasceremo andare - lasciatemi andare
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Mamma mia, mamma mia, mamma mia lasciami andare

    e lasciarmi morire
Oh tesoro non puoi farmi questo
    Devo solo uscirne
Devo solo uscire dritto via da qui

    Niente veramente importa
    Chiunque può capirlo
    Niente veramente importa,
    niente veramente m'importa,

    Comunque soffi il vento...
