Ho letto su un forum americano delle considerazioni interessanti sulla kava, che gettano nuova luce anche sui presunti effetti epatotossici:

I believe there is a very large culture of kava use in the Pacific Islands. If I am not mistaken Kava was introduced later to Hawaii, but has become a staple there.
I guess the kava industry really took a dive from a tall cliff. After booming for a period of time there was problems with unscrupulous kava extract makers that were using the whole plant to make more money. This caused kava to become banned in several countries and really made a dent in the market - as the media was slow to separate the toxicity of the tops of the plant from the safety of the root. There's a reason the natives didn't eat the tops. It's similar to the tomato plant - the vegetation is toxic, but the root is safe."
Questo spiegherebbe sia la scaristà di effetti in certe situazioni (come molti preparati a base di erbe gli effetti sono molto variabili a seconda della coltivazione, della raccolta della conservazione....), sia gli effetti a volte tossici che sarebbero stati riscontrati in certi casi.
Certo sono info tutte da verificare, è un tipo qualsiasi che parla su un forum quello che ho citato.Comment
